Mr. Potato Head has had a long and eventful life. This February marks his 60th birthday and his 59th wedding anniversary to the glamorous Mrs. Potato Head. After all this time they’re still in love. Their secret: they still go on adventures together. Along with their family life Mr. Potato Head and his leading lady have costarred in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise with everybody’s favorite cowboy and space captain.
Many things have changed for our beloved spud, potato, family since they were introduced to the public in 1952 and 1953. Originally a child had to buy the accessories (or were given them by a truly awesome adult) and an actual potato. The child then created Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head by stabbing the poor spud with the accessories. As the Mr. Potato Head franchise grew in popularity the basic Mr. Potato Head starter pack included the plastic potato that we know today.
As Mr. Potato Head aged he has also gone up in value. The Mr. Potato Head of 1952 cost a grand total of 98 cents. (On the down side whenever he started to rot you had to go out and buy a new potato.) Nowadays you can’t get a member of the plastic spud family for fewer than ten dollars. (Some ‘vintage’ potato heads sell for up to $40.
Despite the changes in the body type, the price hike and the age gap, the Potato Head Family is still a loveable group of tubers. They are fun, fashionable, (who could ever forget Mrs. Potato Head’s pink high heels) and still can entertain small children when we don’t want to.
